Mr. Hiroyuki Konuma – Former FAO Regional Representative for Asia Pacific – appointed Senior Advisor to the AIT President

Mr. Hiroyuki Konuma has been appointed as Senior Advisor to the President of the Asian Institute of Technology, starting September 2015. Mr. Konuma recently retired as Assistant Director-General and FAO Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific, Bangkok. Mr. Hiroyuki will advise the president on food issues, one of AIT’s focus themes.

 

Prof. Ioan Marinescu appointed Senior Advisor to the AIT President: ABET Accreditation for Industrial, Civil and Environmental Engineering Graduate Programs

Prof. Ioan D. Marinescu has joined AIT for the August Semester during his sabbatical from the University of Toledo, USA. He has been appointed as Senior Advisor to the President with two primary functions. Prof. Marinescu will teach a management of research course at the School of Management and he will assist the Institute to gain ABET Accreditation (USA) for Industrial, Civil and Environmental Programs, liaising with Prof. Nitin Tripathi, Director of Special Degree Programs, Prof. S. Kumar, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the identified field of study coordinators. The process is expected to last at least 18 months, and Prof. Marinescu will complete the preliminary stage of the process by the end of the year, January 2016.

 

Student Counsellor

AIT Management approved the set-up of a Student Counsellor system. The plan calls for a professional counsellor to be present on campus once per week. A full-time secretary will be employed for administration, and an on campus faculty member will be designated as a “warden” for students’ direct liaison regarding personal matters.

 

Ten-day Inspection/ Review Mission to AIT Center in Vietnam

AIT Management authorized a decision of the Audit Committee (13 July 2015) to send a team to AIT Center in Vietnam to review and assess its financial performance along with financial aspects of the academic and training programs offered at AITCV. Also, the team will assess the governance, risk management and internal control systems of the Center. AIT Head of Finance Mr. Noppadon Rittipongshusit and Compliance Officer Mr. Bishwa Kanta Gautam, and one faculty representative, will visit AITCV for ten days from September 1-10, 2015.

 

Campus Machine Shop at ISE in November

Approval has been given to open a new Campus Machine Shop at the Industrial Systems Engineering Building (Chalermprakiat Building) at the beginning of November. The Machine Shop housed at ISE will provide services for the whole campus. Dr. Pisut Koomsap leads the initiative. One staff machinist will be hired to oversee the shop.

 

CCTV for Staff Housing Buildings

Security will be enhanced at Staff Housing facilities with the introduction of video monitoring systems. CCTV is being installed and will be operational in one month.

The Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy

Public Relations Department of Thailand will be holding a mobile exhibition on    “The Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy” at the AIT Conference Center on Wednesday, 26 August 2015 from 13.30-15.30 hours.

Mr. Apinan Juntarungsri, Director General of the Government Public Relations Department, Mr. Prasart Pasiri, Advisor of the Royal Development Projects Board, and Mrs. Usanee Sritanyarat, Executive Director of the Foreign Office of the Government Public Relations Department will be participating in the event. A Thai cultural performance by Ritthinarongron School, and the mobile exhibition will be the other highlights of the event.

Inaugural Distinguished Adjunct Professor Research Seminar

The Inaugural Distinguished Adjunct Professor Research Seminar will be delivered by Prof. Buddhima Indraratna on the topic “Advancement of Railway Infrastructure: Higher Speeds and Greater Loads,” on Friday, 28 August 2015 from 9.45-12.00 hours at Room 108, AIT Conference Center.

Dr. Buddhima Indraratna is a Professor of Civil Engineering, and a Research Director at the University of Wollongong, Australia. He has been the Foundation Director of the Center for Geomechanics and Railway Engineering based at the University of Wollongong since 2000, and a Program Leader of Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence in Geotechnical Science and Engineering since 2011.

Visitors

  • A delegation from Bhutan, led by Dr. Phanchung, DG, Department of Research and External Relations, Royal University of Bhutan / 26 August 2015 / to have a study tour and to visit laboratories, library and other campus facilities, and to meet with faculty members and network with AIT officials.

  • The AIT Offshore and Technology Management (OTM) program hosts a 17-member delegation of faculty and students from the Ocean Engineering Department of the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia on Friday, August 28 from 9.00 to 13.00 hrs. The visit includes an OTM briefing, lab visits, campus tour and complementary lunch.
