AIT faculty awarded APN research grant

Prof. Mukand S. Babel of the Water Engineering and Management (WEM) Field of Study, School of Engineering and Technology,  has been awarded a grant of $80,000 by the Asia Pacific Network (APN) on Global Change Research for a project “Developing an Operational Water Security index, and its Application in Selected Diverse Regions of Asia” for a two year period (2014 – 2016).

In collaboration with Dr. Nguyen Mai Dang (Water Resources University, Vietnam) and Dr. Devesh Sharma (Central Rajasthan University, India)—both of whom are WEM alumni—the proposed project aims to (a) establish a practical framework to develop a water security index (WSI), using appropriate dimensions, sub-indices and indicators at local and basin scales, (b) implement the index in diverse study areas in Asia (Thailand, India, and Vietnam), and (c) assess the status of water security at different time scales: past, present, and future. Through interactions/feedback with/from relevant stakeholders throughout the duration of the project, policy guidelines for actual operationalization of the index will be developed.

AIT’s Water Engineering and Management (WEM) awarded a prestigious project grant

The Water Engineering and Management (WEM) field of study has been awarded a project grant of $429,990 by the CGIAR’s Water, Land and Ecosystem (WLE), Greater Mekong Initiative. Under a competitive selection process, WEM was one of the fourteen shortlisted awardees among a pool of one hundred and four applications. The project entitled “Developing an Operational Framework for River Health Assessment in the Mekong River Basin”, which will be carried out over a period of three years (2015 – 2017),is led by WEM’sProf. Mukand S. Babel (Team Leader). The other team members include Dr. Oleg Shipin (Environmental Engineering and Management), Dr. Sangam Shrestha (WEM), and Dr. Victor R. Shinde (WEM).

The objective of this project is to develop an indicator system to monitor and evaluate river health in the Mekong River Basin (MRB), and demonstrate its application in a selected catchment—the Songkhram (Thailand). The project implementation will involve two broad work packages, with the support of two partners - the Thai Water Partnership (TWP), and the Pollution Control Department (PCD), of Thailand’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE).
