1) The 2nd Seminar BCG Model in the Health and Wellbeing Sector

We are pleased to invite you to the second seminar on Thailand’s Bio-Circular-Green Economy Model: Awareness Raising, Capacity Building and International Perspective. This seminar will focus on the ‘Health and Wellbeing Sector’ and will be held on Monday, 25 July 2022, 13:30 to 16:05 hrs Bangkok Time GMT+7 (Virtual). The speakers will introduce the BCG model and broadly describe how it is being applied.

The Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG) model has been conceptualized to underpin Thailand 4.0. It is an integration of bioeconomy, circular economy and green economy. Bioeconomy involves the production of renewable biological resources and the conversion of these resources into value-added products. Circular economy aims at reusing and recycling resources. Green economy aims to keep the economy, society and environment in balance, leading to sustainable development.

The BCG model represents a strategy to drive the country’s economic and social development. As such, the BCG model is expected to provide further impetus for implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, the BCG model is expected to be a focus of discussion at the 2022 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting, chaired by Thailand.

The Department of Development and Sustainability is pleased to invite you the Special Lecture titled Business, human rights, and just transition in the context of energy transition by AIT alumnus Dr. Sokphea Young, Honorary Research Fellow at the University College London (UK) and Research Associate at the University of Oxford’s (UK) China Centre. Dr. Young obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Melbourne (Australia), Master’s (with distinction) from Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand), and Bachelor’s from Royal University of Agriculture (Cambodia).

In his talk, Dr. Young will draw on cases in Europe and Southeast Asia to highlight key human rights issues of the energy transition, discussing just transition, the supply chain of renewable energy, such as wind and solar farms, and the complexity of responsible businesses. He will then propose a framework to understand and address human rights issues in the energy transition in the context of business and human rights.

Besides his academic career, Dr. Young advised international development agencies, multinational companies, banks and international financial institutions to manage and mitigate social, environmental, governance (ESG), human rights and political risks in East and South East Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

3) The Water Security and Climate Change Conference

Date: 1-3 December 2022

Venue: Hybrid (with physical sessions at the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand)

Organizers: CNRD (TH Köln), SWINDON (TU Braunschweig), FSC (Univ. Hohenheim),
SDG Network (Univ. Gießen), ABCD Centre (TU Dresden), & the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).

The Water Security and Climate Change (WSCC) series of conferences have been held on an annual basis since 2016. The first edition of the conference was organized in Bangkok (2016), and subsequently in Cologne (2017), Nairobi (2018), San Luis Potosí (2019), and Hanoi (2021). The overarching objective of these conferences is to proliferate the exchange of knowledge and practical know-how on the intrinsic relationship between water security and climate change, with a view to advance fundamental and action research in this domain that will help humankind address one of the greatest challenges of our times.

The WSCC conferences have become a notable academic platform for scientific, technical discourses, and policy-oriented discourses and discussions, evidenced by the increased number of participants each year. Furthermore, the conference has also contributed to the strengthening of the EXCEED by connecting member networks as well as raising awareness on the topic of water security and climate change. The conference additionally broadens its organization committee in 2022 by including the DAAD-funded organizations SDG nexus Network and ABCD-Center.

This year, the WSCC will be held from 01–03 December 2022 in Bangkok. The conference will be organized in a hybrid format, with a selected number of participants invited to Bangkok to present their work in person, while some sessions organized online for a wider audience.
