AIT will sign an MoU with Industrial Estate of Thailand on Excellence Center Cooperation

There will be an official opening of the Excellence Center at the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (I-EA-T) on Thursday, 4 February 2016 from 13:30 – 16:00 hrs. at Uthai Meeting Room, 6th floor, Headquarters of Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand. A Memorandum of Understanding on Excellence Center Cooperation between the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and I-EA-T will also be signed by Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, President of AIT, and Dr. Verapong Chaiperm, I-EA-T Governor at this event.

Under the MoU AIT and I-EA-T will cooperate in sharing information related to industrial development and to exchange, develop and consolidate their knowledge and know-how including support for human resource development related to industrial development.

 

SERD welcomes a seconded faculty from India

The School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) welcomes Dr. S. Suresh seconded by The Government of India as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Environmental Engineering and Management Field of Study for one semester (starting 21 January 2016).

Dr. Suresh received his Ph.D. (Chemical Engineering, Environment, Energy and Biochemical Engineering) from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, India in 2010.  Dr. Suresh is an Assistant Professor & Editor (IJFT MANIT Journal) at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology Bhopal (MANIT), India.   His main areas of research include Separation Process, Catalysis & Reactor Design, Wastewater, Waste-to-Energy, Nanomaterials.

He has held various research positions at a number of Universities in India including Pondicherry University, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and International Centre for Materials Science, JNCASR, Bangalore.

He has written a number of international research articles (more than 50) and books/book chapters (more than 13) in his area of research in the good reputed publishers such as American Chemical Society, Elsevier, Wiley Science, Taylor-Francis (CRC press), McGraw Hill, BSP and Studium press (India) Pvt Ltd. He also filed 2 Indian patents and authored over a dozen International and national conference proceedings papers.

In recognition of his research contributions, he has received a number of awards and honours including Young Scientist Award instituted by Government of Uttarakhand & DST, India; Visiting Research Fellowship from International Centre for Materials Science, JNCASR, Bangalore, India; Prof R C Singh Medal and IEI Young Engineers Award given by Institution of Engineers (India); Rashtriya Gaurav Award from India International Friendship Society, New Delhi.

Many societies have honored him as Life Member such as ACS, AIChE, IIChE, IEI, IESI, ISTE, BRSI, CRSI, CSI, IWRS, ICCE, MRSI, IWWA, IPHE, ISCA, BiGFIN. He has been nominated in the various organizations /institutes as a member of expert including MPCST, solid waste management under urban development and National Innovation clubs, Rashprati Bhavan, New Delhi, India. He has been reviewer of many reputed International Journal papers such as Chem. Eng. J, Ind. Eng. Chem. Res., J. Hazard. Mater, CLEAN - Soil, Air, Water, Can. J. Chem. Eng., Bioremed. J and others.

Condolences - PASSING AWAY OF PROFESSOR S.C. BHATTACHARYA

It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart to have to inform members of the AIT Community that Professor Sribas Chandra (S. C.) Bhattacharya has passed away on the evening of 29th January 2016 at his residence in Kolkata, India. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

Professor Bhattacharya was a faculty member of AIT for more than two decades at the Energy field of study, School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) during 1982 – 2004. Since his retirement from AIT, Prof. Bhattacharya was still very active in his profession as the President of International Energy Initiative; Vice President, World Bioenergy Association; Adjunct Professor, Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM), Kolkata, India; and Associate Editor, J. Solar Energy.

Just this April, Professor Bhattacharya was among the first group of former faculty members who have kindly accepted my invitation to serve as AIT’s Distinguished Adjunct Professor. In his response to my call to re-engage with AIT, Professor Bhattacharya told me in his email: "I look forward to getting involved in AIT's efforts to overcome its present difficulties.”

On behalf of the AIT Community, we express our heartfelt sympathies and sincere condolences to his family during this time of bereavement.

Extension of Deadline – “AIT Distinguished Research Awards 2016”

The deadline for the applications of the "AIT Distinguished Researcher Awards 2016" towards recognizing the valuable contributions and professional accomplishments of its Faculty and Staff in research has been extended to 15 February 2016.

The awards have two categories namely:

1. AIT Research Leader Award

2. AIT Young Researcher Award

Applications are to be submitted to vpresearch@ait.ac.th  

 

Seeking contributions for the CCA2@AIT Program 

Building on the previous work carried out under the Center of Excellence on Development in the Context of Climate Change (SDCC), AIT is launching an initiative called "Climate Change Asia-Catalyzing Capacity for Action @ the Asian Institute of Technology (CCA2@AIT)."

This initiative emphasizes capacity building, and endeavors to "build the capacities of the various actors and stakeholders in the regions in order to effectively address the challenges of climate change," in line with the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Developmental Agenda.

The institute needs some help from AIT staff members and students in designing the following materials:

1. Logo for the initiative (which reflects the name of the initiative "CCA2@AIT").

2. Original creative artwork on themes, which reflect the initiative's premise and agenda. Examples include (but are not limited to):  

•Controlling GHG emissions to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels (as per the Paris Agreement).

•The three core areas of action according to the climate agreement - Finance, Technology, and Capacity Building.

•Climate change impacts on various sectors (e.g. water, agriculture, infrastructure; among others)

•Building the capacities of the various stakeholders in Asia to respond to climate change challenges.

•Climate change' at the heart of decision-making.

•Low carbon development pathways

•Climate-resilient societies

SDCC will choose THREE best submissions (1 logo and 2 artworks), which will feature on the website and in all publicity material of this initiative. In addition, as a token of appreciation, each chosen submission will be awarded a prize of USD 100 (in THB).

Campus Updates

 

Delegates from University of Tarumanagara, Indonesia, visits SERD

35 students and 2 lecturer (Ir. Liong Ju Tjung, M.Sc (mastering about city and housing infrastructure) and Drs. Putu H. Aryana, MM (mastering about real estate marketing) from Tarumanagara University, Jakarta, Indonesia visited AIT/SERD on 27 January, 2016. This university is one of the oldest private universities in Indonesia.

The purpose of the visit was to meet the faculty members related to RRDP and UEM and interact with them. This was organized as part of their education tour themed “Highlight the Dynamic Temple City”. The delegation was welcomed by Dean SERD, Professor Rajendra P. Shrestha. A special lecture was given by Dr. Mokbul Morshed Ahmad, Coordinators of RRDP Program and Dr. Vilas Nitivattananon, Coordinator of UEM/GDS program in SERD.

Dr. Liong, who is also an AIT alumnus, gave a brief presentation about their university and the projects undertaken. After the program, the group visited the Energy Park.

The Language Center will organize a Survival Thai Course for Beginners as follows:

Survey for Talad-Thai Car Pool Service

AIT Campus Sustainability Club has recently started its Green Initiative to Reduce the Use of Plastic Bag project and is now promoting carpooling from AIT to the local vegetable market Talad Thai.

The club is interested to host a shared Songthaew rouond trip to AIT-Talad Thai to reduce the consumption of plastic bags while shopping. The club encourages the AIT Community to “bring their cloth bags” or “buy cloth bag from the club” and be a part of plastic bag reduction campaign.

Professional Training Program on Overseas Training on Contract and Procurement Management

AIT Extension will organize a Professional Training Program on Overseas Training on Contract and Procurement Management to be held from 1 -2 February 2016 at AIT Conference Center, Room B 115.

The training program, which is supported by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Afghanistan, is prepared for the FAO professionals in Afghanistan and is designed to meet the requirement of the client, based on the assessment of organizational needs.

The mandate of FAO in Afghanistan is to support agricultural and environmental rehabilitation and assist the country to become a food secure and self-reliant nation in accordance with the principles of the National Development Framework of the Afghan Government.

The objective of the Organization is to improve livelihoods for all sections of the rural community based upon economically viable activities – food production, off-farm employment and trade - social cohesion and sustainable use of natural resources.
