 (i) Administrative Appointments

Email from AIT President (1 Oct. 2018)

Dear AIT Faculty and Staff,

Please find below some Administrative Appointments for your information.

School of Management

The appointment of Prof. M. Nazrul-Islam as interim Dean of the School Management has been extended until 31 January 2019, while the recruitment process for the position of SOM Dean is underway.  The new Dean will hopefully be on board as soon as feasible.

The Institute is grateful to Professor Islam for accepting this responsibility until a new SOM Dean is selected.

Office of Procurement, Inventory & Assets (OPIA)

The direct-hire staff position of OPIA Director is being advertised and subjected to an open recruitment process.  As the recruitment would take some time until the process is complete, and to ensure continuation during the transition period, Ms. Pakkamol Dherapongsthada is re-engaged and appointed as interim OPIA Director from 1 October 2018 until the new OPIA Director is appointed and takes over.

On behalf of all members of the AIT community, I also wish to express my sincerest appreciation to Mr Vasvan Songpitakchai for his service as Acting OPIA Director for the past three months.

Office of the Human Resources Services (OHRS)

With the extended sick leave of Mr. Jiraphong Bumpenyoo, interim Director of the Office of Human Resources Services (OHRS), and pending completion of the recruitment process for a regular replacement, Ms. Maybel Diopenes was appointed as Acting OHRS Director effective as of 24 August 2018.

Office of the President

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Bhawat Traipattanakul as Special Assistant to the President with effect from 1 October 2018.  Dr. Bhawat will be working closely with me and the stakeholders of AIT to facilitate the process of implementing my Vision for AIT.  He will carry out due diligence on issues of interest to the Office of the President, as well as to coordinate and follow-up on tasks and initiatives with different units of AIT.

Dr. Bhawat is an AIT graduate and recently received his Ph.D. in Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Let us all give them our support and utmost cooperation.

AIT President

(ii) A Better Working Environment

Email from AIT President (5 Oct. 2018)

Dear members of the AIT family,

I am committed to creating an environment at AIT that enables us to take the Institute to a higher level.  To do so, it is essential that we foster a positive and team attitude.
But there will be instances where a person may feel that an unsatisfactory situation has developed at AIT which requires addressing, and thus wish to lodge a complaint or express a grievance.  For these, AIT already has policies and procedures for addressing grievances, such as sexual harassment, bullying, invasion of privacy and discrimination, among others (PA 2-1-2) and on disciplinary action (PA 1-3-3, X; PA 1-1-1, IX). Procedures for handling the grievances of students are set out in the Student Handbook.

In short,

1.     All complaints from within a unit must be addressed through the chain of command within the unit.
2.     Complaints about other units/persons must be addressed by the complainant, through his/her supervisor, to the supervisor (or next chain of command) of the other unit.
3.     For students, complaints must be addressed through the relevant chain of command: academic advisors; Department Heads; Dean; Director of the Office of Student Affairs.

However, if after following these established procedures, it is felt that the complaint or grievance cannot be resolved through these channels and it is of a serious nature, it should be drawn to the attention of the AIT Administration.  Should the matter reach this point, here is the system for complaint or grievance:

Step 1 — Make a report and send it, using your AIT email address, to report@ait.ac.th .  Any complaint or grievance reported in this way will be addressed seriously, and in utmost confidence.  No anonymous complaints will be accepted.
Step 2 — The Director of the Office of Academic Administration (OAA), Ms Izel Ann Dante, has been entrusted by me to make an initial assessment of all complaints and grievances (including, but not limited to, cases of unethical behavior and misconduct) and to determine whether there is a case.  She will do this by first ascertaining all facts material to the complaint.  This may involve speaking confidentially to the complainant.  She will also review the relevant Institute Policies and Procedures.
Step 3 — Based on her assessment, she will submit a confidential report to me, recommending either that there is a case, or that no further action is required.  I will then decide the actions that the Institute needs to take.

I would like all of us to focus on the challenges facing AIT.  But to do so requires that we address legitimate concerns about the governance of the Institute.  Before making a complaint, you should be confident of its legitimacy and seriousness.  And if you are confident of that, we will take your concern seriously.  This system described above will provide an equitable and confidential channel for students, faculty and staff to put forward their grievances and complaints.  The administration will do its utmost to try to reach a fair resolution.

Let’s all strive to have a better working environment at AIT!

Thank you!
Dr Eden Woon
President

VENUE:
AIT Conference Center (AITCC)

PROGRAM:
13:15-14:00 – Felicitation of Prof. Shunji Murai by Dr. Eden Y. Woon, President of AIT and
Delivery of the inaugural lecture by Prof. Murai on "Recent Advances in Earthquake Predictions - A Reality Now".

14:30-15:00 – Geo-Smart City by Dr. Sukit Viseshsin, ESRI, Thailand.
15:00-15:30 – Recent Research and Development Activities and Solution Services in RESTEC by Dr. Aya Yamamoto, RESTEC, Japan.
15:30-16:30 – Poster session and tea break.

ABSTRACT OF THE INAUGURAL LECTURE:

Advances in GNSS (including the GPS) technology as well as the rapid growth of GNSS data receiving stations around the world have made it possible to detect pre-signals of large earthquakes, which is an exciting development. Macroscopic Phenomena before an earthquake such as crustal change, infrasound anomaly, ELF emission anomaly, temperature anomaly and ionospheric anomaly can be observed, but none of these have been successfully used in predicting earthquakes. Prof. Murai has investigated all these anomalies and he found that ionospheric anomaly causes some delays in arrival of the GNSS signals. He applied an artificial intelligence technique to detect such delays caused by the ionospheric anomaly a few hours before an earthquake to successfully predict it.

Prof. Murai established an entity called Japan Earthquake Science Exploration Agency (JESEA:http://www.jesea. co.jp) after the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in Tohoku area in Japan in 2011 for analyzing the pre-signals for predicting earthquakes, and publishing them in form of a weekly bulletin. The bulletin is distributed among the registered individuals and organizations in Japan. On 5th September 2018, a pre-signal for an impending earthquake was picked-up in the Hokkaido region of Japan and a prediction was made. Subsequently, an earthquake measuring 6.6 magnitude struck the southern Hokkaido on 6th September 2018.

HOW DIFFERENT IS KINT?

·         KINT helps users to never lose their friends and colleagues, in which part of the world they are, and stay connected with them throughout their life.
·         KINT groups are completely private and secure and are accessible only to the members from anywhere in the world.
·         Unlike the existing chatting and messaging applications, KINT allows its users to have full control and flexibility in displaying their contact information.
·         KINT accommodates unlimited number of members in a group as against the limit set by some existing apps. A main group or any sub-group under it can even have tens of thousands of users as its members.
·         However large a group is, KINT takes only a split second to update data or process information flow without any problem.
·         Unlike other apps, KINT is completely free of boring advertisements, harmful spam, fake friend requests and hassles of the sort.

As of 30 June 2018, the number of ‘KINTers’ (active users of KINT App) stood at 35,000 from more than 45 prestigious institutions, including Thailand National Defense College, 2nd Cavalry Division King's Guard, Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School, Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy, Royal Thai Naval Academy, Royal Thai Air Force Academy, Royal Police Cadet Academy, College of the Constitutional Court, Office of the Provincial Prosecutors (Dept. of Justice), Police Education Bureau, Public Relations Association of Thailand, Air Technical Training School, Triam Udom Suksa Suwinthawong School, Huachiew Chalermprakiet University, Thonburi Commercial College and Don Muang Technical College.
