(i)    NEW YEAR PRESENTS

Email from President: 8 Jan. 2018

Dear AIT Faculty and Staff Members,

First of all, let me thank you for the outstanding job you have done last year in support of our Institute, our students, our research endeavors, and our outreach mission. As you have no doubt seen in the last 4 years, AIT has gradually recovered from its worst financial crisis, mainly because of our real actions and team work. As we are about to celebrate AIT’s 60th Anniversary in 2019, all of us want to see AIT on a strong footing to allow it rising to a new height.

I believe that new year is an auspicious time to communicate the good news to you. It’s about how AIT would like to take better care of your health and welfare, as a way to show its appreciation for your never-giving-up on AIT. Aside from the new salary system based on a fair and transparent campus-wide evaluation, the AIT Management Team has endorsed the following new-year presents for my approval to you.

(1) Better Welfare and Benefit

A bold initiative was to look at the entire package and tried to ensure the effectiveness of our hard-earned resources to benefit our employees at large. By reorganizing the half-emptied commuters' buses into vans, we were able to save as much as 1.6 million Baht, which could be used to enhance our health care.
The Office of Human Resources Service (OHRS) then invited 4 health insurance companies to propose a group health insurance policy for our 633 employees and 544 dependents. After many rounds of presentation, the Finance and Resources Committee finally recommended for a higher coverage, which will cost AIT of 6.88 million Baht in premium, more than twice the total cost of 3.17 million Baht that AIT paid last year under the currently lower coverage.
Soon the OHRS will issue to you your health insurance card with full details of the coverage as summarized in Attachment 1. For example, each member is entitled to 35 OPD Visits @ 1,000 Baht ceiling, compared with currently 30 OPD Visits @ 400 Baht ceiling.

(2) More Incentives for Attracting Sponsored Projects (see revised P&P PA-4-1-2 Engagement of Faculty and Staff beyond the age of 60).

Currently, a part of the approved budget for sponsored projects is allocated as Professional Development Fund (PDF Fund 50), which can be accumulated and used for professional activities of the Principal Investigators. Upon retirement, the faculty will have no claim on the residual of the PDF as it will be taken over by School. The AIT Management Team (AMT) has endorsed for my approval that half (50%) of his/her accumulated unused PDF will be disbursed as retirement fund to the retired employee at the time of his/her retirement. The other half (50%) will be credited to his/her Responsibility Center to support the professional development of new faculty members.
In addition, the AMT also endorsed for my approval to allow faculty members to use of his or her PDF to pay for the business-class upgrade of air tickets in any official trip longer than 5 hours.

(3) Allowing Faculty to become Distinguished Adjunct Faculty / Professor (DAF/DAP) upon his or her retirement (P&P PA-4-1-1).

To allow for professional continuity, current faculty members meeting the eligibility criteria will be offered appointments as Distinguished Adjunct Faculty / Professor (DAF/DAP) six months prior to their mandatory retirement from the Institute after reaching the age of 60 years.

(4) Restoring Employee Students (P&P AA-8-8-2).

Employees with at least five (5) years employment with AIT, can/may register as part-time students in AIT’s masters or doctoral degree programs, subject to the approval of their immediate work supervisors. The said employee must be academically qualified first and receive approval from his or her immediate work supervisor(s) and Deans / Directors with special arrangement for the working time used for study. The same admissions standards that apply to full-time students will apply to employee-students on part-time status. The part-time employee students will be waived from tuition throughout the course of study, but they must pay the total registration fees (normally paid by full-time students) upfront at the beginning of the program. This upfront payment of registration fees (4 terms@20,000B for master’s degree and 7 terms@20,000B for doctoral degree) is used to confirm his or her seriousness.

(5) Fellowship for Children of current AIT regular employees (P&P AA-8-8-2).

Children of current AIT regular employees, who are employed with AIT for at least five (5) years, will be provided fellowship equivalent to 25% discount on tuition fees (on top of other merit fellowships) of AIT’s masters or doctoral degree programs.
Let me end this email by wishing you and your family a Happy New Year 2018, for my last time as AIT President.

With regards,
Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai
AIT President
